What is alignment? According to what is the body aligned?
When I talk about alignment, an architectural term that comes to my mind from the times I was doing construction work. “Tensigrity” was told to me by the civil engineer Tarkan Erman, with whom I worked. Tensegrity, tension and integrity, or a structure with no weak points in which the tension is distributed equally throughout the structure in the whole formed by elastic and rigid structures. The human spine is also a tensegrity structure.
While yoga helps us understand our weak points and strong points in our body, it also helps us approach our integrity by understanding where we make ourselves weak and where we are strong in our lives.
Alignment in yoga is a journey in which our body unites with our soul and explores the structures within our body instead of going where our thoughts take us. Making this journey brings us closer to ourselves, allows us to rediscover ourselves with curiosity every day and develop a curious perspective on the world and our environment. Like Carlos Castenada said “Life is not made to be static.”
Namaste!
